PhD Thesis Title: Study of Supported Lipid Bilayers and Membrane Proteins Using Hyperpolarized Xenon-129 and Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.

In this study, our goal is to enhance the NMR sensitivity and selectivity by using hyperpolarized (HP) Xenon gas to study the membrane proteins aligned in its native biological environment. Polarization transfer from HP 129Xe to the membrane protein nuclei will help to enhance the S/N of low abundant membrane protein nuclei such as 13C and 15N. This will help in making solid-state NMR a robust technique to study more biologically interesting systems and their various functions.

MS Thesis Title: Formation of calcium phosphate crystals under lipid monolayers
This study looks at the precipitation of calcium phosphate crystals at phospholipid Langmuir monolayers. Hyperoxaluria, elevated oxalate concentration in the kidney, is a condition frequently associated with individuals suffering from kidney stones. This condition causes the breakdown of membranes and creates free radicals at the cellular surface which results in hydrolysis of phospholipids. These products of lipid hydrolysis are examined for their effect on calcium phosphate precipitation. It is found that a ternary mixture of phospholipid (DPPC) and its hydrolysis products, a lysolipid and a fatty acid, cause a significant increase in heterogeneous calcium phosphate precipitation

One of his goals is to expand FAN’s analytical department with advance instruments and techniques further facilitating R& D work and product development work for various industries.
